Training programme LEADs the way
The Hanson Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) programme is designed to train and educate young people who are keen to learn and develop supervisory skills in a hands-on working environment within a quarry, cement works, asphalt plant or concrete plant.
Learning and development manager Karen Wright said: “We launched the LEAD programme in 2012 and it has been very successful. The first three years are spent gaining experience and relevant qualifications in operational aspects of our business. This runs alongside studying for a foundation degree at the University of Derby, which will eventually lead to an honours degree in mineral extractives management. From year four onwards, the apprentices could progress to become a trainee manager, plant supervisor or another role within our business.”
The trainees study by distance learning, fully funded by Hanson, and are supported throughout the programme by both a manager and mentor.
Reece Phillips, who works at Barton sand and gravel quarry in Staffordshire, joined the LEAD scheme in 2014. “My role covers everything from production to business improvement,” he said. “Since starting the apprenticeship, I have completed the safety, health and environment (SHE) NVQ level 4 for quarrying as well as achieving good marks in the first year modules of my HND. I hope to get a first in my degree and possibly continue to a master’s and complete the SHE NVQ level 6.
My long term ambition is to be in a senior management role.”
