Biodiversity and site stewardship

Action plans at every active quarry

We now have biodiversity and geodiversity action plans (BAPs and GAPs) in place for every quarry that has been active in the last three years and they are all published on our website. We also have an indicator looking at active and inactive quarries with high biodiversity value. These are defined as those located within 500 metres of a Site of Special Scientific Interest and again all of them have BAPs in place. We have a database to manage actions within our BAPs and track progress.

In 2015 HeidelbergCement launched the third edition of its biennial biodiversity research competition The Quarry Life Award (www.quarrylifeaward.co.uk). The competition, which focuses on biodiversity protection and management, raised very strong interest from students and researchers across the globe. Over 450 proposals from 22 countries were put forward.

The top five selected from each country will carry out their field research over the summer with the best three awarded cash prizes of up to €5,000. In December, the international jury, which will include experts from conservation and environmental groups, will reward the top projects with prizes of up to €30,000.

The award was launched by HeidelbergCement in 2012 to raise the understanding of the biological value of its mining sites, both during and after extraction and is run every two years.
