Pump project wins top award
A project in east Yorkshire was highly commended in the 2015 Concrete Society awards. The redevelopment of Yorkshire Water’s Bridlington Pump Station, which is adjacent to two EU-designated Blue Flag beaches, used multiple specialist concretes to achieve the high-strength and durability necessary to withstand the challenging conditions of a sandy location. It was recognised for the versatility of its concrete, the way the visible concrete integrated with the architecture of a nearby Victorian Spa, and the fact that it supported the community environmentally.
Technical director Charlie Jones said: “We were delighted to win this award, which demonstrates our commitment to technical excellence. We worked closely with the contractor and admixture supplier to overcome challenging ground conditions, strength and durability requirements.”
The judges said the impact of the above-ground building was one of permanence and belonging. “It was a complex project which was delivered with aplomb with minimal impact on the nearby lifeboat ramp and promenade. “As a building designed to hold services for a waste water pump station, it is well planned and has been delivered with excellent collaboration between all the contractors.”
